ONE IN THE CHAMBER by Marja-Lewis Ryan
Six years ago, a 10-year old boy accidentally shot and killed his 9-year old brother after discovering a seemingly unloaded gun. Now, six years later, the court appointed social worker has come over for a home visit to determine if the now 16-year old boy should be let off of parole early. The social worker, Jennifer interviews the family's children Kaylee, Adam, Ruthie and the parents Charles and Helen. The play echoes themes of Ordinary People and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
This play was inspired by the September 28th, 2013 article in The New York Times: "Children and Guns, the Hidden Toll", which explored the rates of gun related homicides versus accidental shootings in America.
Playwright and Director Marja-Lewis Ryan was nominated for Best Playwrighting for an Original Play at the Ovation Awards, 2014, and won The LA Critic's Circle Award for Best Writing.
LA REVIEWS for ONE IN THE CHAMBER:
"...With Aristotelian compression and almost clinical detachment... this quiet, somber story is powerful..." -GO! Jenny Lower LAWEEKLY
"Playwright Ryan manages to get deep inside the head of five very different members of a fictional family that feels entirely real. The performances she as director has elicited from her all-around superb cast are as memorable as they get...Would be a crime to miss." -WOW! Steven Stanley STAGESCENELA
"Writer-Director Marja-Lewis Ryan displays her creative strength in...the looming portrait of a tortured family that contains so much subtext and reveals so efficiently its many stresses..." -RECOMMENDED Reza Vojdani STAGE RAW
"Hitchcockian...vivid...timely..." -FOUR STARS Bonnie Priever examiner
