Rat in the Skull by Ron Hutchinson
Rat in The Skull is a timely and powerful drama dealing with incidents of police brutality during the 1980's in England. The play follows the story of a suspected member of the IRA being questioned about his part in a terrorist bombing, and the alleged abuse at the hands of the investigators. Rat in the Skull explores the balance of power between "Authorities" and the "Criminal" class. The play is presented at first as a mystery, to which we are immediately given the solution. We know instantly from the scrawny young Irishman who steps to center stage that he has been detained in London as a bombing suspect and, we see instantly that he has been badly beaten. We then learn from the conversation between a callow probationary policeman and a gruff old inspector that an investigation into the beating has been started.
