The St. Louis Poetry Center will host a benefit celebration and reading on Sunday, April 26, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m., "Celebrating Maya Angelou" at the Probstein Club House in Forest Park, St. Louis. The celebration ticket price of $50 will include free appetizer reception with bar, live music, and options to bid in both a silent and live auction. A percentage of the proceeds from this event go to benefit the scholarship program of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The clubhouse has a parking lot and handicap access.
Reading from Angelou's work, will be special guests, East St. Louis Poet Laureate Eugene B. Redmond and the members of the Eugene Redmond Writers Club; poet Shirley Bradley LeFlore, St. Louis Poet Laureate Michael Castro, poet Shane Seely and others. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., the first African American sorority, will give a short history of Dr. Angelou as a sorority sister, and a sister to the nation. Music will be provided by Due South, along with contemporary dance by Caitlyn Vasser in response to Angelou's poetry. The Poetry Center is thrilled to celebrate in collaboration with AKA, Inc., the rich gift of this native St. Louisan who became a legend and a leader in her own time.
