La Negrita Chronicles: A New Play by Frania Romulus, Presented by Speak Up Theatre
LA NEGRITA CHRONICLES is a comedic satire that delves into the intersection of racism and sexism on college campuses. Romulus brings mainstream stereotypes of all sorts to life to tell their hilarious and heartbreaking stories. Traditional theatre norms are broken and political incorrectness is embraced, revealing the unpleasant underbelly of our "post-racial" society. Through the story of one young woman's journey a startlingly accurate reflection of modern American culture emerges.
On April 16th, opening night, there will be a post show talkback with the director and playwright. Wine and cheese will be served.
*Graphic language, racial slurs, and mild violence are part of this production*
SpeakUp is a brand new theatre company founded by local New England artists. Our aim is highlight traditionally unheard voices & stories. We believe that by changing the face of theatre in Rhode Island, by giving people of color, women, the disabled, immigrants, transfolk, or any marginalized person the platform to tell their story, we can be a part of the international movement towards inclusion and justice for all.
