This OCTOBER, Run of the Mill Theater will produce another Classic, Othello by William Shakespeare. This drama is just one of the great tragedies by William Shakespeare. The play begins with Othello eloping with Desdemona, the daughter of a highly esteemed statesman. Othello is a Moor of African decent and a general in the service of Venice. Iago, Othello's ambitious friend and brother in arms, begins an evil and malicious campaign against the hero because Othello promotes Michael Cassio to the position of personal lieutenant. Iago purposefully manipulates Othello in to thinking that Desdemona has committed adultery with Cassio. Othello becomes jealous and suspicious of Desdemona. He confides in Iago that he plans to poison Desdemona. Plots and murders ensue and Othello returns to the castle to kill his innocent wife. He eventually smothers her to death.
Emilia tells Othello the truth about the scheming Iago. Othello wounds Iago, then kills himself after Iago kills Emilia.
Othello The Moor of Venice is believed to have been written in approximately 1603. The work revolves around four central characters: Othello, his wife Desdemona, his lieutenant Cassio, and his trusted advisor Iago. Attesting to its enduring popularity, the play appeared in 7 editions between 1622 and 1705. Because of its varied themes — racism, love, jealousy and betrayal — it remains relevant to the present day and is often performed in professional and community theatres alike. The play has also been the basis for numerous operatic, film and literary adaptations.
