LOCAL WONDERS, a play with songs
Left to enjoy the fruits of a successful middle age in the relatively comfortable obscurity of Nebraska's "Bohemian Alps," Ted Kooser finds himself both lauded as a world-class poet and then gripped by a sudden confrontation with cancer. Forced to question the value of his life and his art, Ted looks back at the events and people that brought him, simultaneously, to the lofty but unstable precipice of both fame and mortality. In "Local Wonders," the character of Ted (Paul Amandes) tells his tale through inspired stories rich in detail and memorable songs. The character of his wife, Kathleen (Anne Hills), comments on Ted's choices (both musically and dramatically), takes on some of the cameo roles, and takes up the narration when Ted cannot. It's a play that takes its audience on a journey that is both universally recognizable and uniquely personal. Directed by Virginia Smith
