'Trash Talk': The Social Life of Garbage
Stokley Towles last piece, Waterlines, was a bookish, quixotic and highly personal investigation of the regional water supply. This time, the local writer/performer (and Culture Mine Co-creator) has turned his attention to garbage--"its environmental impact, sure, but as important, its psychological impact: how we feel about what we throw away. His MO, says The Stranger's Brendan Kiley, is to "interview people about the mundane facts of their lives, mix all the details in a storytelling blender, and then make a show telling you things you never even realized you should've been wondering about." The resulting work, Trash Talk, explores the human side of the garbage stream: garbagemen who can't stop themselves from photographing trash cans even on vacation; attendants who gather throw-away flags so they can dispose of them "properly"; and suburbanites who leave plates of cookies for their garbage collectors.
