The New Cult Canon Series Presents: KISS KISS BANG BANG
Inspired by the A.V. Club column, The New Cult Canon series celebrates the next generation of cult movies and the obsessive weirdoes who love them.
Scott Tobias will be introducing the film and his A.V. Club cohort (and resident Shane Black expert) Nathan Rabin will join Tomias for a discussion afterwards.
The New Cult Canon returns to Music Box on Thursday, October 14th for a screening of Shane Blackâs brilliant retro action-comedy Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Once the most highly paid screenwriter in Hollywood, Black brought a dark, mordant wit and a gift for hard-boiled dialogue to scripts for â80s actioners like Lethal Weapon, The Last Boy Scout, and The Long Kiss Goodnight, but his work was always filtered through the sensibilities of other (not always great) directors. After disappearing for nearly a decade, Black teamed up with longtime producer Joel Silver for Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, an â80s-style buddy comedy that doubles as a sly commentary on Hollywood and the art of screenwriting. With the most lovable shaggy-dog plot this side of The Big Lebowski, the film stars Robert Downey Jr. as the knockabout hero and narrator, a petty thief from New York who accidentally winds up in Tinseltown after stumbling into an audition. He tags along with private eye Val Kilmer as preparation for a movie role, but the two immediately get into trouble, with hilarious results.
