Haven String Quartet presents silent horror films accompanied by live music for Halloween
NEW HAVEN, Connecticut, (August 2010) Music Haven's quartet-in-residence, the Haven String Quartet (HSQ), will be presenting a concert featuring silent horror films with live musical accompaniment at New Haven's premiere recording studio, Firehouse 12, on Saturday, October 30th at 8:30 PM and 10:00 PM. All proceeds from the concerts will go towards Music Haven (www.musichavenct.org), a non-profit organization that seeks to build community in the most underserved neighborhoods of New Haven through music education and performance.
The concert will feature scenes from classic horror films such as "Faust", "Phantom of the Opera", "Dracula" and a new hand-drawn film from award-winning animator, Glenda Wharton. The HSQ and guests will accompany the films with original music by local New Haven composers as well as Philip Glass' String Quartet no. 5.
On the program will be F.W. Murnau's disturbing and visually stunning 1926 "Faust" – a story about the Devil and God battling over the Earth's dominion. The Devil tempts Faust with ultimate knowledge, and tricks him into selling his soul. With fascinating expressionistic special effects, images from this film will stay with you afterward. The HSQ will be presenting excerpts of this film scored by New Haven composer, Daniel Smith.
The 1925 version of "Phantom of the Opera" gives the audience a dark look into obsessive love. The horribly disfigured Phantom is fascinated by the voice of a beautiful young singer and plots to imprison her in his underground lair with his music and dark magic. Lon Chaney - "the Man of a Thousand Faces" – stars as the tragic villain in this silent horror flick with original music by local composer, Netta Hadari.
"The ZO" (www.zoplayroom.com) is a hand-drawn animated tale about a girl trapped in a nightmare house with a monster. Award-winning animator Glenda Wharton's over 5,000 drawings in pencil, charcoal and paint for this film recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and has screened at the MoMA. The music and effects by New Haven native, Ian Melchinger, are truly original and coupled with the film's montage of different visual techniques will promise to hypnotize and terrify you.
If you are not scared yet, the culmination of the evening will feature scenes from Tod Browning's 1931 horror classic, "Dracula" with Bela Lugosi in the title role. The HSQ will accompany the film with Philip Glass' chamber music masterpiece, his String Quartet No. 5.
Tickets are $20 (plus $1.99 handling fee) and are available only online from www.brownpapertickets.com or at their 24/7 ticket hotline: 1-800-838-3006. All major credit cards accepted.
