THURSDAY, AUGUST 5: Contact Improvisation pioneer K.J. Holmes (NY) | Vitali Kononov (CA) | Rachael Lincoln (CA) | Nina Martin (TX) | "Bessie" recipient Bebe Miller (OH) | KT Niehoff (WA) | Degenerate Art Ensemble Co-Director Haruko Nishimura | Christian Swenson (WA) | Alia Swersky (WA)
"Bebe Miller is a cartographer of human emotions; mapping the landscape of the passions of her dance with luminous intelligence." (The Washington Post)
FRIDAY, AUGUST 6: Cathie Caraker (CA) | Martha Eddy (NY) | Karl Frost (CA) | Louis Gervais (WA) | "Bessie" and Guggenheim Award winner Miguel Gutierrez (NY) | Aiko Kinoshita (WA) | Nina Martin (TX) | Degenerate Art Ensemble Co-Director Haruko Nishimura | Aaron Swartzman (WA) | Alia Swersky (WA)
Also featuring Michal Lahav (WA) & Susan Rethorst (NY)
"I make performances that are about things and are things themselves. The things they are about are big: how to live in the world, how to love, how to feel about being yourself. Probably the biggest question I make art about is: why are we alive. I am a dancer. I write poems. I make songs and music with my voice and rudimentary knowledge of instruments. I think that we are all powerful people." (Miguel Gutierrez)
Schedule subject to change.
Saturday, August 7 features a performance of dance works by SFDI students from around the world. 7pm, Velocity Dance Center, 1621 12th Avenue, $5 at the door.
::
These concerts are part of the 17th annual SFDI (Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation), August 1-8, a world-renowned dance festival offering master classes with internationally-recognized faculty, public performances, jams, and more. 18 dance artists from around the world and the state converge upon Seattle to teach and perform a wide variety of improvisational dance techniques.
SFDI is produced by DAG (Dance Art Group), which is supported in part by 4Culture and the Mayor's Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs.
