The Beth Custer Ensemble will perform a set from Custer's rich repertoire of jazz, rock, and funky tunes including from her musicals with writer Octavio Solis (The Ballad of Pancho & Lucy; June In A Box); the dance scores for The Joe Goode Performance Group (Hometown) and Jo Kreiter's Flyaway Productions (Lies I Can Dance To); contemporary chamber wizards The Left Coast Chamber Ensemble (Vinculum Symphony, Bernal Heights Suite).
The Beth Custer Ensemble is: Jan Jackson on drums, (also with Will Bernard's Motherbug), guitarist David James (also with Sila, The Coup, Spearhead and bassist Seth Ford Young (Tom Waits).
Dina Maccabee is a violist, violinist, vocalist, and songwriter living in San Francisco. She is planning to release a recording of original songs in 2010 in collaboration with Toby Summerfield (Chicago) as well as a new album by her duo Ramon&Jessica, which also features Jesse Olsen. In addition to her work with Real Vocal String Quartet, she performs in many styles and many bands, from Middle Eastern Psych Rock to 60âs Brazilian Tropicalia.
She has composed scores for Shotgun Players theater company, Just Theater, and several Bay Area filmmakers. Her string arrangements have been published under the imprint of Strings Magazine, and her performances are featured on many studio recordings. Tours with Carla Bozulich, Vienna Teng, and Beth Custer have taken Dina across the country and around the world, while recent performance highlights include opening for Primus on New Years Eve, warming the crowd up for Sean Hayes at the Independent, and sharing a bill with Vasen.
Allison Lovejoy has performed internationally as a soloist, chamber musician, and accompanist. Her insightful and passionate performances have received wide acclaim, and her varied repertoire highlights virtuoso works of the late 19th and early 20th century.
She has performed the Beethoven âEmperorâ Concerto with the Orchestra of the International Festival of Music in Nicaragua under the baton of Maestro Urs Leonhart Steiner, and has also appeared as soloist in Rachmaninovâs âRhapsody on a Theme of Paganiniâ, Gershwinâs âRhapsody in Blueâ and the Prokofiev Concerto No. 3. She was a prizewinner in the San Jose Young Artist and the San Francisco Concerto Orchestra Competitions, as well as a recipient of a Shenson Concert Series Grant. A guest speaker and performer at the 1998 San Francisco Symphony all-Gershwin concert at Stern Grove, she regularly presents concert-talks throughout California.
Miss Lovejoy received her M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, her B.M. from the University of the Pacific and the Royal Academy of Music in London. Her teachers include Robert Helps, Daniell Revenaugh, Mack McCray, Nathan Schwartz and Gyorgy Sandor. She was also a participant in the Holland International Music Sessions for young artists, where she participated in master classes with John OâConor and Marie-Francois Bucquet.
She has recorded a CD of solo works by Rachmaninov, Ravel, Debusssy and Bartok on Metro Records, and is releasing âNocturnesâ for piano, as well as an album of her original cabaret compositions, this year. Her accordion music has been featured on Monadic Records and in the film âThe Wavesâ at Cannes Film Festival 2004, and her piano recordings have been featured in several films.
She has worked as composer, arranger, keyboardist, and vocalist on a variety of projects, including opera, musical theater, jazz, blues, hip-hop, and rock. As a member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra in 2003, she played at venues such as the Beacon Theatre in New York and the Flint Center in Boston, also appearing on US and Canadian television.
Miss Lovejoy is a faculty member at the Academy of Art University and the Community Music Center, and has held positions at the College of Notre Dame and Foothill College. She has led master classes in the United States, Europe, and Nicaragua, and is dedicated to making music education and live performance available to everyone.
