Night School: No Curtain with Kate Whoriskey, Intiman Theatre, Artistic Director
NO CURTAIN. A new Night School series bringing the city's leading theatrical, dance, photographic, and musical theatre artists out from behind the curtain. Each "No Curtain" event will focus on a group of artists or singular performer/practitioner unveiling the process behind their craft in an intimate salon setting in The Sorrento's Top of the Town. The first event will feature artists performing a scene from Intiman Theatre's upcoming production of Ruined, as well as a moderated conversation delving into how the play was created and developed with Artistic Director Kate Whoriskey, several actors, and Tim Appelo.

Ruined is the most acclaimed play of 2009, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, New York Drama Critics' Circle Award, Drama Desk Award and an Outer Critics Circle Award. The play is set in a small mining town in the war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo, where Mama Nadi both protects and profits from the young women who seek refuge in her rain forest bar and brothel. Expertly navigating relationships and politics, this remarkable story is rich with humor, music, hope and humanity.

In 2004, Lynn Nottage and Kate Whoriskey traveled to the bordering country of Uganda, where they spent two weeks interviewing Congolese women who had fled their country and found refuge. Inspired by these women, they created a story that would be specific to the complexity of what is happening in the Congo. The next year, Nottage returned and interviewed refugees fleeing armed conflicts in Congo, Uganda, Sudan and Somalia. Together with Whoriskey and their collaborators, she developed the play over five years.

Kate Whoriskey is in her first season as Intiman's Artistic Director. She has directed the world premieres of three plays by Lynn Nottage: Ruined (Goodman Theatre/Manhattan Theatre Club), Fabulation (Playwrights Horizons) and Intimate Apparel (South Coast Repertory). Her other credits include the world premieres of Julia Cho's The Piano Teacher at South Coast Rep (which she also directed at Vineyard Theatre) and Massacre by José Rivera at the LAByrinth Theatre Company, of which she is a member. She most recently directed the first revival of William Gibson's The Miracle Worker on Broadway.

Tim Appelo is Editorial Director of City Arts Magazine and a former drama critic for The Nation, Seattle Weekly, Seattle Times, Seattle P-I, and KCTS.

Ruined begins July 2 at Intiman Theatre and will run through the summer. Information is available at www.intiman.org or 206.269.1900. Night School is a partnership with the Sorrento Hotel, providing a space to explore contemporary art and ideas in a historically rich setting.
