BREWSIE AND WILLIE - WORLD PREMIERE STAGE ADAPTATION OF GERTRUDE STEIN'S MODERNIST MASTERWORK
CENTER FOR NEW PERFORMANCE AT CALARTS in association with POOR DOG GROUP presents
BREWSIE AND WILLIE - a World Premiere stage adaptation
Written by Gertrude Stein Adapted by Marissa Chibas, Erik Ehn and Travis Preston Directed by Travis Preston
Original music composed by Andrew Conrad and Andrew Gilbert Choreography by Mira Kingsley
Brewsie and Willie explores the hearts and minds of a disparate group of American soldiers and nurses, who find themselves in limbo as they wait to return home following the end of World War II. Their concerns are timeless -- what jobs will they have? What will America's future be and what is their place in it? Against the backdrop of downtown Los Angeles, original music and live video combine with Stein's compelling text, based on her own conversations with the soldiers she met and befriended in Paris.
Created in association with Poor Dog Group, a bold young company of performers made up of CalArts alumni, Brewsie and Willie also features an all-CalArts design and production team of alumni and current students.
As resonant today as in 1945, the concerns of these GIs and nurses are vibrantly embodied by the performers. The core ensemble is Poor Dog Group, an Los Angeles based collective of like-minded performance and media artists whose mission is to develop original theatrical expression through the creation of new work and radical reexaminations of existing texts. Founded in 2007, PDG has presented work at REDCAT, UCLA, and many other Los Angeles locations and toured to Eastern Europe last summer.
