The UTSA Lyric Theatre, under the direction of William McCrary presents two one act operas performed by student performers and accompanied by the UTSA orchestra members. GianCarlo Menotti's "The Old Maid and the Thief" is a comedy about an old spinster, Miss Todd (Margaret Flower) and her live-in maid, Laetitia, (Samantha Serrano) who falls in love with Bob, (Rob Saldana) a shiftless wanderer who comes to the door one day. The two women have to keep up with the pretenses and lies that accompany his stay at the house of the two single women, all while staying away from the prying eyes and wagging gums of the nosy, Miss Pinkerton (Maggie Sorrell.
Giacomo Puccini's "Suor Angelica/Sister Angelica" takes place in a 17th century convent in Siena, Italy. Sister Angelica, (Myrna Peralez) a Florentine noblewoman, because of a youthful indiscretion has been sent away to the convent where she has lived for the past 7 years without word or visitation from her family. When Angelica's aunt, the Princess (Randi Wooding) comes to the abbey to have a Angelica sign a document, she tells Angelica that the baby she bore years ago has died. This heartbreaking news plunges Angelica into almost committing suicide. But before she takes her own life, thereby committing a mortal sin, a miracle happens.
