Funky Lomaland Aged in Red Wine Barrels Bottle Release
After well over a year of waiting, Funky Lomaland Aged in Red Wine Barrels is finally ready to drink! This is a truly special beer. In the fall of 2013, we brewed a batch of Lomaland--our year round saison--and fermented it with a little added space dust: Brettanomyces Claussenii & Brettanomyces Bruxellensis Trois. These two slow-moving yeast strains added a marvelously funky complexity that starts with the barnyardy/fermented-fruit aroma and continues in the dry, deliciously nuanced flavor. The long rest in red wine barrels has given Funky Lomaland a gorgeously fruit-saturated finish & an oaky, rich backbone. Important thing to understand: this is not a sour beer (Brettanomyces do not make beer sour.)

TASTING NOTES

Appearance
Big, fluffy white head atop a rusty straw pour. A hint of ruby from the red wine barrels. Crystal clear if the bottle hasn't been agitated.

Aroma
Whole lotta funk! Deep fried, breaded-'n-battered, twangy country funk. A marvelous combination of ripe stonefruit fruit funk (think: pear/cantaloupe/mango) from the Trois & earthy, musty cellar funk from the Claussenii. Notes of lemon grass, oak, hay, & earth.

Taste
Notes of lemon zest, peaches, & crackers hit the palate first. The red wine & oak character comes on strong mid-palate, with cherry & vanilla notes predominating. It then flows seamlessly into a Brett-heavy, fruity/earthy funk finish that's pleasingly dry but lingering & deliciously juicy.

Mouthfeel
Light-bodied, effervescent, alarmingly drinkable. Its carbonation, complexity, & easy-drinking nature would make it a beautiful food pairing option.

Overall
This beer turned out exceptionally well. It is very clearly a saison, but totally different from Lomaland and even quite different than non-barrel aged Funky Lomaland. It's bursting with a remarkable array of fruit notes, derived from both the red wine barrel & the Brett, and a healthy dose of barnyard funk. Overall, a very complex beer & one that will continue to evolve & funkify for a long time.
