Wrecking
Witness choreographers re-imagine each other's works! Saturday: New work by Christy Funsch, wrecked by Rowena Richie, Megan Nicely, and Keith Hennessy
Sunday: Film by Mary Armentrout wrecked by Erin Mei-Ling Stuart and Julie Mayo (Brooklyn)
Wreckings take place between 12-3 PM. Come watch the process or come at 3 PM to watch the original and the wrecked versions of it side by side. You can come and go throughout the afternoon, too! "Wrecking" is a process where Rethorst invites in another choreographer to work with her in-progress piece. She recalls: "He [Tere O'Connor] entered into the rehearsal process and looked at the piece as though it was to become his from that moment forward, changing it to his liking, imposing his own aesthetic with complete disregard for my intentions. I then took back the rehearsals, with the same attitude toward his changes..akin to culture shock; disorienting, the center of gravity shifted."
Wrecking was originally developed by Susan Rethorst in 1995 in New York City. The first wrecked piece was "Little by little she showed up." The first wrecker was Tere O'Connor. It has since been done at Danspace St Mark's, Fidget Space in Philadelphia (under the name Remix Festival), Bryn Mawr College, independently in Chicago, and has included such heavies as Annie B. Parsons, Paul Lazar, David Gordon, John Jesrun and Jen Rosenblit.
