After reading the New York Times Bestseller Nonfiction book, The Boys in the Boat, most people are left wanting more. They don't want the story to be over.
The Boys in the Boat: A look behind the scenes will give you just that - a more detailed look at how the book came to be, the processes used to research and write the book, and a colorful and detailed look into the life of Joe Rantz as he became a father and raised his family.
Schedule of events: 1-2pm VIP meet-and-greet 2:30-4pm Speaker presentations 4-5pm Book signing and artifact exhibit
Start your afternoon with a VIP meet-and-greet with Daniel James Brown and Judy Rantz Willman. Appetizers and refreshments will be served at this intimate gathering, and you will have the opportunity to speak with Daniel and Judy on a personal level. Judy will also give you a close up look at many of the most memorable of Joe Rantz's belongings, including his Olympic medal, National Championship cups, uniforms, scrapbooks and Olympic memorabilia. Joe's granddaughter, Jennifer, will also show you the scrapbook that started it all - the four year journey of Joe's college rowing career complete with articles by Royal Brougham and George Varnell and many of Joe's personal letters and other rowing related treasures.
We will then move to PUD's auditorium for the main presentation. Learn about how the book came into being from Judy Willman and listen to Daniel James Brown talk about the book and it's characters. After a short reading from the book, Judy will give you a look into her life growing up with her dad. The presentation will close with an extended question and answer session with both Daniel and Judy.
After the presentation, we will finish the event with a one-of-a-kind book-related exhibit. All of the items from the VIP gathering will be on display to the general audience along with a number of "behind the scenes" items about the book; displays of original brainstorming and edits from the manuscript and book cover art from around the world. Daniel and Judy will be signing books and books will be available for purchase, courtesy of Uppercase Books. Dessert and refreshments will be served.
This exciting fundraiser is hosted by North Cascades Crew, a nonprofit rowing club located on Lake Stevens. Established in 2008, NCC has experienced steady growth and development of our Youth and Adult programs, sharing our passion for the sport of rowing with the community, in a positive and safe environment. We are a relatively new rowing club, and we don't yet have any shelter for our boats or our rowers. We recently entered into partnership with Snohomish County Parks and now have a new location at Wyatt Park where there is room for a boathouse! We are fundraising to construct a building on our new site that will protect our boats and our members from the elements. You can help us achieve this goal by attending our event, or making a donation to our club.
