2nd Annual Juneteenth Awards and Pride Celebration
The mission of the Barbara Jordan / Bayard Rustin Coalition is to empower Black same-gender loving, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals and families in Greater Los Angeles, to promote equal marriage rights and to advocate for fair treatment of everyone without regard to race, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
The Juneteenth Awards were established in 2009. The first honoree of the Barbara Jordan Award was Vallerie Wagner. The first honoree of the Bayard Rustin Award was Doug Spearman.
This year's honorees are California Speaker Emeritus Karen Bass and Jeffrey King (executive Director and Founder of In The Meantime Men's Group).
The awards' purpose is to highlight individuals who exemplify the leadership and values of two paragons of the Black LGBT community for which the awards are named: Barbara Jordan (the first African-American woman elected to Congress from a former Confederate state) and Bayard Rustin (Martin Luther King, Jr.'s right-hand man and the chief organizer of the 1963 March On Washington).
There will be home-style cooking provided by Dulan's Soul Food Kitchen and cool refreshments along with great company! Join us!
