Family Ecology Sails 2015
Calling all parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles! Are you and your kids interested in learning more about the ecosystems in which we all live, work and play? Do you know which watershed you live in? Have you ever wondered what exactly a watershed is?
There's no better place to answer these question than from the deck of a tall ship! Join us on the Appledore IV for a fun afternoon of learning the science of our land and waterways. A Family Ecology Sail is a hands-on experience for everyone aboard.
In the Saginaw River you'll learn the different factors of weather, point and non-point source pollution, basic knots and navigation techniques, and observe native species in the habitats.
At the Saginaw Bay you'll collect lake bottom samples and help the crew raise and set the sails.
Heading back upriver to Bay City you'll analyze the benthic samples by testing the water for pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen and nitrate levels. You'll even get the chance to observe live plankton beneath a microscope!
Snacks and juice/water are included. Children under 6 years old are required, by law, to wear a lifejacket at all times while aboard the ship. Participants must provide their own life jacket for children under 6 years old.
All sales are final. This is a non-refundable ticket.
