acornDance/Company Y present "little hunger" and "Entwine"
In this evening of post modern movement performance, Aiko Kinoshita and Roel Hammerschlag offer two exciting new dance works that challenge the viewer with explorations of some of the less comfortable angles of emotional experience.
// Combining improvisation and set material with an original live sound score by Seattle composer/musican, Rob Millis, Kinoshita's "little hunger" is a dynamic, evocative and highly physical work which follows six dancers through choice, fear and the act of being brave, in the precious moments just before change. A self-made cage of wire, a fortress of feathers and a stream of words written on the body, catch the performers in action or inaction, offering glimpses of their habits, fears and neuroses.
Performed by: Wylin Daigle, Rob Millis (composer/musician) Aiko Kinoshita (direction), Kathryn Padberg, Jonas Radvik, Kelly Sullivan, and Aaron Swartzman.
// Hammerschlag's ENTWINE is built around the theme of desiring intimacy but feeling suffocated once inside it. Using visually arresting movement derived from the vocabulary of contact improvisation, four dancers engage in continually changing constellations of partnering that reflect the rich tapestry of human relationships. Plays on the face and head lead the rest of the dancers' bodies through the body of the piece, which starts with moments of cautious and giddy intimacy, evolves into intimate pillowtalk, and finally finds itself entangled in an escape from asphyxiation. Live music by Tom Fallat and Nick Merz alternates between seducing the viewer into moments of intimacy and amplifying the discord of struggle.
