SECOND, a play by Neal Utterback
SECOND is a multifaceted dark comedy of mind games around questions of hope and faith - unfolding through three separate, concurrent scenes set on a New York City Christmas Eve:
In a hotel room, a scientist and a prostitute test the boundaries of trust; In their brownstone, a doctor and a tv news-reporter teeter on the edge of their future; In a tenement, two criminals on a job await further instructions.
Outside, "the worst snowstorm in history" rages and the city goes mad over a mysterious man who touches a woman, seemingly brings her back to life - then disappears. Is he the second coming of Christ? Is he the victim of divine coincidence? Or does the city just need to believe in something? SECOND crackles with spontaneity, desperation and brutal humor while asking the question "Do miracles exist?"
The Filament Theatre Co. production and Los Angeles premiere of SECOND is a choreography of six actors and three cameras telling one story. Staged in a private residence in Echo Park, the audience is divided amongst three rooms of the house. As one scene plays out live in the room, the other two scenes are captured by live cameras and presented cinematically, allowing each audience a unique experience while still sharing the same story.
