These NYC Premiere Screenings take place during Manhattans prestigious Tribeca Film Festival. "Sonicsgate" was in consideration to be an official part of the ESPN Tribeca Sports Film Festival section, but it was automatically disqualified due to its previous online release. Kenny Mayne of ESPN has led the charge to bring "Sonicsgate" to New York, and the filmmakers encourage people who are attending Tribeca to come down the street for one afternoon at The PIT.
More than 90,000 people have watched "Sonicsgate" online since it first premiered in October 2009. Director Jason Reid felt so strongly about the film's message that he put it up for free at www.sonicsgate.org, successfully breaking down doors using new media in order to expose the shocking events that killed the Seattle SuperSonics. To cover costs for making the trip from Seattle to NYC, the Sonicsgate crew has created a Kickstarter fundraising campaign to fund its grassroots effort.
"Sonicsgate" has been shortlisted for two Webby Awards in the categories of Best Editing and Best Sports. Webby nominees will be announced April 13. AMC Film Critic gave the film 4 out of a possible 5 stars, and Sports Illustrated named it the "Most Persuasive Grassroots Flick" of 2009. More at www.sonicsgate.org/reviews.
