River Stones, Rails and Renaissance: A Rochester Retrospective
GSCS is celebrating its Ruby or 40th Anniversary during the 2014-2015 season. What began in 1974 as a choral group to present the musical work Handel's "Messiah", has changed, grown and matured into the group we now know as the Granite State Choral Society. Under the tutelage and direction of a half a dozen directors, the group has presented two concerts series a year for every season. Works presented have not only been classical but also contemporary, folk, popular, operatic as well as music from Broadway.
In keeping with the goal for excellence and diversity, GSCS has contracted with Grammy-winning composer Nicholas White, current Chair of the Arts and Director of Chapel Music at St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire to compose a brand new musical work especially for GSCS. This five movement composition will celebrate Rochester's History and not since the early 1900's has a musical piece been created to honor Rochester.
GSCS is also excited to announce the appointment of Daniel K. Roihl as Interim Director for the 40th Anniversary season. With a Doctorate in Choral Music, as well as extensive choral directing and performing experience, Mr. Roihl will direct GSCS as they premier their new commissioned piece "Rochester" at this Gala event.
The event will be MC'd by renowned magician and entertainer BJ Hickman, and begins with a cocktail reception, followed by dinner, 50/50 raffle, live auction, and a concert to premiere the newly commissioned work. The evening is perfect for client and social entertainment, and the proceeds help sustain our diverse range of choral music performances and community outreach.
