The Milky Way
(Luis Bunuel, France/West Germany/Italy, 1969, 35mm, 105 min)
Luis Bunuel's entertaining, absurdist spoof on religion daringly deconstructs contemporary and traditional views on Catholicism. Co-written by Jean-Claude Carriere and shot by legendary cinematographer Christian Matras, The Milky Way follows two French beggars en route to Spain's holy city of Santiago de Compostela. Along the way, they travel through time, bearing witness to Jesus' speech at the wedding in Cana, remarks by the Virgin Mary about her son's grooming habits, and even an appearance by the Devil himself.
